Chiefs' Rashee Rice Says He Aims To Mature After Car Crash
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is speaking out after his multiple-vehicle crash for the first time since his arrest.
In April, police issued an arrest warrant for the NFL player regarding a high-speed crash in Dallas. Rice turned himself in and was later released on bond.
On June 8, the 24-year-old publicly commented on the incident and shared his plans to "mature" going forward.
Rice spoke to reporters while attending a youth football camp in Kansas City, per ESPN.
"I've learned so much from that," the athlete said. "All I can do is mature and continue to grow from that. This is a step in a better direction for me."
Rice said he looked to his teammates for support.
"Accidents and stuff like that happen, but all you can do is move forward and walk around being the same person, try to be positive so that everybody can feel your love and your great energy," he said.
The 24-year-old participated in the camp alongside teammates and fellow wide receivers Marquise Brown, Xavier Worthy, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore, ESPN reported.
Prior to his most recent comments, Rice had released a statement about the accident on his Instagram story.
"Today I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday’s accident," he wrote on April 3. "I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities. I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident."
Rice faces eight charges as a result of the car crash. Read on to learn more about the offseason incident, below.
When and where did the crash happen?
The car crash involving Rice occurred on the night of March 30 on an expressway in Dallas, police said.
According to a preliminary investigation, two drivers, one speeding in a Corvette and the other in a Lamborghini, caused the collision, police said.
"The occupants of the Lamborghini and the Corvette all ran from the scene without stopping to determine if anyone needed medical help or providing their information," the Dallas Police Department said in a statement on March 31.
Dashcam video obtained by NBC News appears to show the moment police say the drivers lost control, with one car slamming into the center median and another spinning out.
Rice's lawyer confirmed on April 4 that the athlete was driving the Lamborghini at the time of the accident.
Was anyone injured in the crash?
Six vehicles total were involved in the collision and two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police.
Kayla Quinn told The Dallas Morning News that she was with her 4-year-old son in one of the cars that was hit during the crash. Quinn's mother, Shuqulia Quinn, shared a video of the scene on Facebook that was seemingly recorded by a bystander.
The video showed a battered gray Hyundai Accent with dents on the front and back doors on the driver's side.
Another video shared on Facebook by Shuqulia Quinn seemed to show the occupants of a car leaving the scene by walking down the shoulder of the freeway.
Was Rashee Rice arrested?
NBC News reported that Dallas police issued a warrant for Rice's arrest in April. He was charged with aggravated assault, collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury.
Rice, a Fort Worth native, turned himself in on April 11 to authorities in Glenn Heights, a city located near Dallas. He was then taken to the DeSoto Regional Jail, the police department confirmed.
According to Rice's attorney, Texas state Sen. Royce West, Rice was released on bond the same day.
“I want to re-emphasize Mr. Rice’s continued cooperation with law enforcement,” West’s office said in a statement April 11. “Mr. Rice acknowledges his actions and feels deeply for those injured as a result of this accident.”
In May, Rice was suspected of assaulting a photographer at a nightclub, the Dallas Morning News reported. Dallas police said the receiver would not face charges over the alleged assault, but the investigation was ongoing.
